I received an email that talks about some top diet & nutrition trends in the US for 2014.  Some of the listed trends are anti-wheat sentiment, reviving ancient grains, fading of low-fat diets, keeping health in mind while shopping, increase in misinformation about nutrition from unqualified persons, and so on.

To draw a parallel in India, I think that the following will be popular in our country –

  • Emails that circulate amongst friends and families talking about ‘miracle cures’.  Needless to say that most of the information that is circulated is false.
  • Weight loss programs – both scientific and unscientific.
  • Revival of millets which are so healthy and traditional.
  • Organic foods – fruits, vegetables, dairy foods, grains, spices, etc.
  • Coconut, ghee, butter, old-fashioned oils making a come-back.

On another note, tomorrow (10th January) is being observed as Dietetics Day in India.  This is in recognition of the science of nutrition & dietetics, and also to promote the qualified professionals.

Feels good to take a break from routine.  I’m back from a fabulous, fun-filled vacation and will resume writing from today.  If you have anything interesting to say, please do write.

Not sure if any of you read my articles on ‘Lactose Intolerance’ and ‘Ragi’ in The Times of India.  If you did, comments are welcome.

I came across an article in Reuters which said there is no scientific evidence to support blood-type diets.  I felt good after reading it.  Nutritionists and dietitians have been saying over and over again that fad diets for weight loss are just that – fads – and no matter what fad diet you try, it doesn’t work in the long run.  The best and healthiest way to lose weight is to eat sensibly and exercise regularly. So, if you’re planning to go on a weight loss program, please do so with the help of a qualified dietitian, and do not fall for advertisements which promise quick weight loss.

Hello Readers!  Nutrition, Wellness & Writing – my 3 passions.  I’ve decided to combine the 3 and start a blog.  Of course, I’ll also write on diet, food and health.  There’s already a mountain of information on these topics so why a blog on the same stuff, you might wonder.  Well, I’ve no answer to that yet………but I’m going to write and it’s not mandatory for you to follow.  I’ll share with you some thoughts, beliefs, experiences, events, anecdotes, interviews, reviews, recipes, and short articles – all related to food, nutrition, diet, health, wellness and ecosystem.

Happy Reading!
